If the 2016 presidential election proved anything, it’s that we all live in our own bubbles, whether they be racial or cultural bubbles, regional bubbles, religious bubbles or party bubbles (and I don’t mean the fun kind). It also proved that people love saying anyone not in their bubble is in a bubble. Essentially, we’ve […]
Nephew's Blog
Nephew's Blog focuses on progressive social and political ideas. Dennis Marrero (aka Nephew) does not like to keep his mouth shut, even when all signs tell him to do just that. This has caused some to even go as far as de-friending him on facebook. His thoughts on religion, race, government and values can be hard to swallow for some, but at the core of all his musings, is his belief that all of us are truly equal (until someone calling the shots says that's not the case).
Never Forget the Accomplishments of President Obama
Thank you President Obama. You will be missed. When history looks back at this time, there’s little doubt in my mind that President Barack Obama will be seen as one of the greatest leaders to ever hold office. While many may disagree with that sentiment, it will not change the fact that he brought historic social and economic change […]
The 10 Commandments According to Donald Trump
It’s Super Tuesday and all signs point to a Trump victory. Surprisingly, this victory has much to do with his Christian-right support. Due to this massive support from evangelical and more conservative Christians, I have decided to create a revised set of The Ten Commandments that will align more closely with Trump’s views and “values”. The 10 Commandments for Christians supporting Trump […]
The Daily Show Takes on The Pharmaceutical Industry
This comedic exposé from The Daily Show’s Michael Che focuses on America’s most profitable “Drug Cartel”: The Pharmaceutical Industry. The most disturbing factoid in it for me, was that Pfizer actually peddled oxycontin as a “non-addictive” alternative to pain killers when it was released. Of course The Daily Show satires are meant to make us […]
Ebola Virus in Africa Reaches Largest Death Toll
The situation in Africa is absolutely terrifying, and it’s these hard doses of natural tragedy that make our social and political partisan banter seem small. The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling for “drastic measures”, and says the outbreak is now the largest in history. “As of Thursday, the pandemic with a 90 percent mortality […]
Ohio Replaces Lethal Injection with De-heading Machine
The Onion’s riveting coverage on Ohio’s new death penalty strategy is absolutely hilarious, in a sad, sad way. “Seeking a more humane method of carrying out capital punishment, Ohio’s new machine yanks inmates heads from their bodies using painless, powerful robotic claws.” – The Onion FOLLOW @unclevsnephew to keep up-to-date on “hard hitting” stories like […]
A Privileged Minority on Affirmative Action
Affirmative action, if you don’t know, “is the policy of providing special opportunities for, and favoring members of, a disadvantaged group who suffer from discrimination [Wikipedia]”. The 6-to-2 ruling in the Court has generally been seen as a popular decision among conservatives, as well as a smaller group of liberals and it should come as no surprise that more states will follow suit in the near future. Here’s my take on the topic. Weigh in on my points by commenting below the article or tweeting @unclevsnephew.
Chris Christie (aka “The Governor”) Must Have Never Watched “The Walking Dead”
Chris Christie’s New Campaign Ad May Give Insight Into his Future Plans for New Jersey. After I saw this TV advertisement for the reelection campaign of Governor Chris Christie, I just couldn’t help myself. The ad ends with a simple and direct message: Chris Christie, The Governor. The last guy that called himself “The Governor” […]
Don’t Take Our Guns! – Uncle Vs. Nephew Part 1 of 2 (Nephew’s Take)
Since the unfortunate events in places like Aurora and Sandy Hook, the issue of gun control has become an unavoidable topic. These incidents, however, have not changed my overall feelings on the subject, and I’m sure they haven’t changed the minds of others who felt strongly one way or the other prior to the shootings. […]
Giving Thanks to American Politics and Culture – 2012 Edition
In celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday, Uncle Vs. Nephew would like to give thanks. Below are the top 5 happenings in American politics and culture that Uncle and Nephew are most thankful for this Turkey Day. Of course, we are much more thankful for our families, friends and health, but what kind of fun is […]
