In celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday, Uncle Vs. Nephew would like to give thanks. Below are the top 5 happenings in American politics and culture that Uncle and Nephew are most thankful for this Turkey Day. Of course, we are much more thankful for our families, friends and health, but what kind of fun is that? We also recognize that Uncle, having to cry uncle as a result of the election, is, well, going through some tough times, but we are grateful that he is willing to at least try to give thanks for something in a political context of American society.
Uncle is thankful for
- The Daily Show: Jon Stewart is a national treasure. His sense of the absurdity of it all does so much to help millions of Americans keep it all in proper perspective. He does not always get his facts right, but, hey, he is a comedian after all. I am grateful that someone was willing to challenge the President on Benghazi, for example, and I will always remember his piece on the relative investment potential of the AK47 vs the AR15.
- Nephew: I am grateful for Dennis as my nephew who knows the old left as I do. In fact, even knows there is an old left. Someday we will get around to discussing whether the Lincoln brigade were a bunch of communists or truly freedom fighters…
- The bright side of the election: America did not elect a man who tried to win off the perceived failure of his opponent, lacked core ideological beliefs ,and would say anything to get elected. Been there, done that, not gonna put up with it anymore.
- The Republican Party moving ahead: I pray that in light of the election perhaps the GOP of power, greed, and single issue politics will stand aside, even, be retired permanently. I am hopeful the Republican primary in 2016 will not be a comedy variety hour like it was this year.
- The End of Ayn Rand: I also believe that just maybe the GOP will abandon the Ayn Rand “virtuous selfishness” virus and become the party of economic freedom grounded in a moral compass that identifies profit as not in itself a virtue. The party that stands for a strong national defense, and individual liberty. Just maybe Barry Goldwater and WFB will look down on conservatives with forgiveness.
Nephew is thankful for
- A year without the war in Iraq: With December marking the year anniversary of Iraq War, I am thankful for all those who sacrificed so much and didn’t even get an NYC parade. My thanks also goes out to all of our active duty troops who continue to risk their lives for us every day, even while we sit to eat, drink and laugh with our families this Thanksgiving.
- Elizabeth Warren: Attention Wall Street – Insider Trading Tip – We now have a Senator who can do more for the Occupy Movement than the actual Occupy Movement. Start moving your funds to the Cayman’s now.
- 100 Issues and 3 seasons of The Walking Dead: It’s not very often that a story appeals to the right, left, independents and all races and creeds, but the genius of Robert Kirkman and AMC have made that happen. If the Zombie apocalypse did start tomorrow, we might start seeing some cooperation in Congress. Who has time for a filibuster when a hoard of walkers is outside of your door?
- Uncle Vs. Nephew: The idea for this blog has been in the works for a very long time and I am so thankful to have a platform to debate that doesn’t make me lose Facebook friends.
- Chris Christie, Donald Trump, Fox News, Herman Cain, Sheldon Adelson, Karl Rove, the Tea Party, Mitt Romney and his binders full of women and last, but not least, the 51% of Americans waiting for handouts: I will be forever grateful for your efforts to reelect Barack Obama. We seriously could have never won the election without all of you.
