[The following contribution was submitted by Ruth McArthur (aka “Auntie” or “Grannie” Ruthie). The event described took place on June 30, 2018 in Kerrville, Texas at a #familiesbelongtogether march.] We met at City Hall. When my group of four arrived, there were only five other #FamiliesBelongTogether demonstrators, some seriously elderly women. A group in red […]
How Donald Trump Divided Us All: From My Bubble To Yours
If the 2016 presidential election proved anything, it’s that we all live in our own bubbles, whether they be racial or cultural bubbles, regional bubbles, religious bubbles or party bubbles (and I don’t mean the fun kind). It also proved that people love saying anyone not in their bubble is in a bubble. Essentially, we’ve […]
Never Forget the Accomplishments of President Obama
Thank you President Obama. You will be missed. When history looks back at this time, there’s little doubt in my mind that President Barack Obama will be seen as one of the greatest leaders to ever hold office. While many may disagree with that sentiment, it will not change the fact that he brought historic social and economic change […]
The 10 Commandments According to Donald Trump
It’s Super Tuesday and all signs point to a Trump victory. Surprisingly, this victory has much to do with his Christian-right support. Due to this massive support from evangelical and more conservative Christians, I have decided to create a revised set of The Ten Commandments that will align more closely with Trump’s views and “values”. The 10 Commandments for Christians supporting Trump […]
Maybe I only thought I was Christian
All Things to All People: Imagining a Post Prejudicial World. My Uncle Wayne was a wise and caring soul, a Pastor ordained by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). We spent many hours discussing theologies of interest mostly to ourselves (I was a Barthian, he preferred Emil Brunner, but we both loved Paul Tillich). Most […]
The Daily Show Takes on The Pharmaceutical Industry
This comedic exposé from The Daily Show’s Michael Che focuses on America’s most profitable “Drug Cartel”: The Pharmaceutical Industry. The most disturbing factoid in it for me, was that Pfizer actually peddled oxycontin as a “non-addictive” alternative to pain killers when it was released. Of course The Daily Show satires are meant to make us […]
Ebola Virus in Africa Reaches Largest Death Toll
The situation in Africa is absolutely terrifying, and it’s these hard doses of natural tragedy that make our social and political partisan banter seem small. The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling for “drastic measures”, and says the outbreak is now the largest in history. “As of Thursday, the pandemic with a 90 percent mortality […]
Ohio Replaces Lethal Injection with De-heading Machine
The Onion’s riveting coverage on Ohio’s new death penalty strategy is absolutely hilarious, in a sad, sad way. “Seeking a more humane method of carrying out capital punishment, Ohio’s new machine yanks inmates heads from their bodies using painless, powerful robotic claws.” – The Onion FOLLOW @unclevsnephew to keep up-to-date on “hard hitting” stories like […]
A Privileged Minority on Affirmative Action
Affirmative action, if you don’t know, “is the policy of providing special opportunities for, and favoring members of, a disadvantaged group who suffer from discrimination [Wikipedia]”. The 6-to-2 ruling in the Court has generally been seen as a popular decision among conservatives, as well as a smaller group of liberals and it should come as no surprise that more states will follow suit in the near future. Here’s my take on the topic. Weigh in on my points by commenting below the article or tweeting @unclevsnephew.
Chris Christie (aka “The Governor”) Must Have Never Watched “The Walking Dead”
Chris Christie’s New Campaign Ad May Give Insight Into his Future Plans for New Jersey. After I saw this TV advertisement for the reelection campaign of Governor Chris Christie, I just couldn’t help myself. The ad ends with a simple and direct message: Chris Christie, The Governor. The last guy that called himself “The Governor” […]
